Security of Supply Today:
How can we achieve sustainable solutions in the natural gas system?
More than 100 guests accepted the invitation to the third edition of OGE’s Ruhr Energy Policy Dialogue on June 16, 2026, at Zeche Zollverein in Essen.
With “Mehr Licht” (“More Light”)—a solo slam on the topic of security of supply—Rainer Holl (author, poetry slammer, coach, and moderator) provided a humorous, accessible, and incisive introduction to this complex topic.
The panelists addressed the question of how to design sustainable solutions for a resilient and economically viable natural gas system, particularly against the backdrop of changing market conditions, geopolitical uncertainties, and growing demands for energy security.
Background: Natural gas supply security remains a central pillar of stability, economic performance, and social security in Germany and Europe, even during the energy system’s transition phase. While demand is expected to decline in the long term, the requirements for a system that is always available and resilient remain high.
The challenge: How can declining gas demand be reconciled with high supply security requirements from both an economic and regulatory perspective?
The solution: Viable solutions require the integrated interplay of efficient infrastructure, functioning markets, and clear regulatory guidelines.
The panel discussion, moderated by Marco Seiffert, featured high-level participants:
- Peter Röttgen Deutsche Energy Terminal GmbH
- Anne Köhler Energy Traders Deutschland
- Sascha GrünerFederal Network Agency – Division for Access to Hydrogen and Gas Transmission Networks, Security of Supply, EU Affairs – Gas
- Dr. Thomas Hüwener CEO, Open Grid Europe GmbH
