TENP III reaches milestone
Final weld marks completion of Hügelheim-to-Hüsingen pipeline section
The Trans Europa Naturgas Pipeline (TENP) has reached an important milestone: the last weld in the Hügelheim-to-Hüsingen section, also known as the "golden weld", has been completed. This weld holds particular significance as it marks the end of a major stage of the construction project. The remaining work will now be completed by the end of the year, after which the recultivation of the affected areas can begin.
Work on the Hügelheim-to-Hüsingen section, which forms the final section of TENP III, has been underway since February 2024. Martin Höhner, Open Grid Europe's technical project manager, said: "The completion of the last weld is an important step for TENP and future energy supply in the region. The excellent work and close cooperation on site have been key factors in this success."
Background to the work on TENP
The work was necessary to replace existing parts of the TENP I pipeline string and ensure security of supply. TENP is one of the most important European pipeline systems for the supply of natural gas, running over 500 kilometres from the German-Dutch border to the Swiss border. Around 93 percent of the pipeline was replaced in the same corridor to minimise the impact on the landscape. The new pipeline is a major contributor to the region's future energy supply. TENP is managed by Open Grid Europe GmbH (OGE) and Fluxys TENP GmbH.
Good cooperation with the Lörrach district authorities
Cooperation with the district of Lörrach also deserves special mention as it has been extremely smooth. "We would like to thank the district of Lörrach for their excellent support throughout this process. This support has been crucial to the running of this construction project," added Martin Höhner. Close collaboration with local authorities and municipalities helped to ensure the efficient execution of the construction schedule without major delays.
The 'golden weld': a symbol of precision and quality
The ‘golden weld’ reflects the hard work and commitment of the people on site. It symbolises precision and quality, which are always at the forefront of construction activities. The completion of the final weld is not only an impressive technical achievement, but also a sign that the project is on the home straight. This success was made possible by the high level of commitment and expertise of the employees.
